Martin, this is absolutely great.
I am in the process of publishing an article in ‘The View’ about Notes Client development tips, and I would very much like to have this one in the article.

Bummer, sounded promising to me, but if it doesn’t work any better than using Windings, there’s probably not much use for it.

Good idea about that unicode character! I tried it: in Windows it worked well with Arial, but no success in OS X. I tried unicode 2588 (OS X knows Arial too), I tried differenf fonts etc etc. No luck yet. It’s getting really late so the searching is for another time.

Martin, that’s plain brilliant. I can’t think of a simpler, more effective way to do it.

I have one suggestion as to what might just make this technique more robust on systems that are lacking Webdings: Unicode character 2588 is a full block as well. So, chosing this character (like copying it from the Windows character table) with any unicode font might work on Mac clients as well. I did not test it, and I’m not sure how say a missing Arial font is replaced on the Mac, but I could imagine, that it will at least be a sans-serif unicode font.

Thank you. Sometimes I found myself coding a lot for what is in essence a very simple thing. On those moments we ‘d better take a step back and rethink what we’re trying to achieve, I believe.
